Part A is paid per child: each eligible child attracts their own rate, and the rates add up. The amount for a child depends on the child's age, and for a child aged 16 to 19, on full-time secondary study. The fortnightly amounts below do not include the end-of-year supplement; the annual amounts printed in the Services Australia guide do include it, which is why a simple multiplication of the fortnightly rate by 26 does not exactly reproduce the annual figure.

ChildPer fortnightPer year (guide figure, includes supplement)
Each child aged 0 to 12$235.48$7,110.20
Each child aged 13 to 19$306.46$8,960.75
Each child aged 0 to 19, in an approved care organisation$75.60$1,971.00
Base rate, each child aged 0 to 19$75.60$2,941.90

Maximum rate versus base rate

The maximum rate is what a family receives when its income is low enough for the income test not to bite. As income rises, the rate tapers down (see the income-tests page) until it reaches the base rate of $75.60 a fortnight per child. The base rate is a floor in the first taper, not a separate payment you apply for: it is the rate you land on after the 20-cent taper has done its work, before the second, 30-cent taper begins above $123,078. A family can therefore be "on the base rate" for years without ever having applied for anything called the base rate. Families in an approved care organisation receive $75.60 a fortnight, which is the same figure but a different rule.

The supplement: $970.90 per child

The Part A end-of-year supplement of $970.90 per child is paid after the end of the financial year. To be eligible, a family must have a combined adjusted taxable income of $80,000 or less, and the recipient and their partner must lodge an income tax return, or notify Services Australia of their income if they are not required to lodge, within 12 months after the end of the financial year. The supplement may be used to offset overpayments found at balancing, which is why some families see a supplement on paper and receive little or none of it in cash. Families earning over $80,000 receive no supplement at all: it is a hard cap, not a taper.

Worked examples (maximum rate, before any taper)

A family in Brisbane with one child aged 7 receives up to $235.48 a fortnight in Part A. A family in Perth with two children, aged 4 and 14, receives up to $235.48 plus $306.46, which is $541.94 a fortnight. A family in Hobart with three children aged 2, 9 and 16 (the 16-year-old in full-time secondary study) receives up to $235.48 plus $235.48 plus $306.46, which is $777.42 a fortnight. These are maximum-rate examples only: the income test, the maintenance test and the immunisation reduction can each lower them, and the supplement is additional to the fortnightly amounts, paid after balancing.

Extras that sit alongside Part A

Eligible families may also receive Energy Supplement, and families receiving Part A are often also eligible for Part B. Multiple Birth Allowance is a supplementary payment paid as part of Part A for triplets or more: $203.70 a fortnight for triplets and $271.32 a fortnight for quadruplets or more, on the guide's figures, and it does not require a separate claim. Newborn Supplement and Newborn Upfront Payment are covered on the how-to-claim page. None of these extras changes the Part A age bands above; they stack on top of them where the separate conditions are met.
